Starting My Day Off Right

I’ve never been a big fan of fall. Perhaps it’s because I dislike the shorter days and the cold mornings. I also don’t like what follows: winter and freezing temperatures. In contrast, the cooler temperatures are better for Ella. She tires out easily in the summer because of her heavy white coat. However, with the brisk temperatures, she has more energy for play in the yard and longer walks. Her sense of smell appears more active this time of year as well. She loves smelling the different foliage that ‌fall has to offer.

Recently, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of fall. Perhaps Ella’s love for this season is rubbing off on me. I enjoy watching her as she strolls through the park, sniffing everything that she can put her nose to. For her, this is a slow and deliberate process; so, I need to leave plenty of time in the morning for our walk. She definitely motivates me to get up and out. She also encourages me to slow down and get away early when the park is still quiet. I use this time to connect with God and appreciate the beautiful world He created,

This morning, during our walk, I caught myself staring at the sun as it shined through the trees. I noticed that the sun lit up the part of the path where I was walking. It gave me a glimpse of what I had imagined heaven to look like, with its bright light and beauty. I left the park thinking, if it weren’t for Ella, I would have stayed in bed longer. But because of her, I experienced a deeper sense of appreciation and love for God’s creation. My mornings start much better this way.

The Bible tells us that Jesus often went away to a quiet place to speak to God. According to Mark’s Gospel, chapter 1:35, Jesus would get up early while it was still dark to pray. Similarly, Luke 5:16 says that He withdrew to the wilderness to pray. If Jesus made this a priority, how much more important is it for me to do the same?  So, I’ve made it a habit to include morning devotions in my life. Whether staring at the sunrise, appreciating His beauty, or quietly reading His word, this time connecting with God is so important to me.
